Zao Liza Ski Resort: A Snowboarder’s Guide to Japan’s Hidden Gem

Yamagata Zao Liza Snow Monsters and Frozen Forest

As a local snowboarder, I’m always on the lookout for amazing slopes, and Zao Liza Ski Resort in Yamagata Prefecture is one of my favorites.

This lesser-known gem offers incredible experiences for snow enthusiasts, from beginner-friendly slopes to the breathtaking snow monsters (“Juhyo”樹氷) at the summit.

Here’s my story from visiting Liza in late December in 2024-2025 winter season.

Three Levels of Slopes for Every Skill

Liza Ski Resort offers slopes divided into three altitude zones, making it perfect for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers:

Lower slopes: These gentle runs are ideal for beginners learning the basics of skiing or snowboarding.

Upper slopes: The highlight of the resort, where you can glide through fields of snow monsters, or “juhyo.”

During my visit, the juhyo were about 80% complete, creating a surreal winter landscape.

They are at the apex of their growth between late January and mid-March.

These unique ice formations are rare, occurring only in select areas worldwide where specific weather conditions align.

Seeing them in person is an unforgettable experience.

Clear Skies and Panoramic Views

I was lucky to visit on a rare clear day.

From the slopes, I enjoyed sweeping views of the Yamagata Basin.

I could even see Mount Gassan, about 60 kilometers (36 miles) away.

The combination of the blue sky and snow-covered landscape was mesmerizing.

Plan Your Visit to Zao Liza

To fully enjoy the juhyo, take the lift to the highest slopes.

Tickets can be purchased at the entrance rest house, which also features a lively restaurant.

The rest house was bustling with visitors when I arrived, making it a great place to relax and grab a bite before hitting the slopes.

Snow Monsters: A Natural Wonder

Juhyo, or snow monsters, are a rare natural phenomenon that forms under specific conditions of cold, wind, and heavy snowfall.

Zao is one of the few places in the world where you can see them.

The otherworldly beauty of these snow-covered trees is something you shouldn’t miss.

Safety Tips for Winter Mountains

While the winter scenery is stunning, mountain weather can change suddenly.

Always check the forecast and avoid venturing out if conditions seem unsafe.

Staying safe should always be the top priority!!
